In the prudish fin de siècle, his free-spirited heroine came under fire — Bizet reluctantly adapted his work. The legendary soprano Emma Calvé, who performed Carmen no fewer than a thousand times, unfortunately never had the chance to express her admiration for this masterpiece in person.
